SASD Teachers Attend Summer Math Institute
Last week, 40 teachers from across the Sheboygan Area School District attended a weeklong institute hosted by the Wisconsin Statewide Mathematics Initiative (WSMI). Classroom teachers, English Language Learner (ELL) and Special Education teachers, as well as interventionists and data coaches participated in the math institute.

John Mees, SASD Homeless Support, met with 4th and 5th grade students at Lincoln-Erdman to discuss homelessness in Sheboygan. The students read books about social issues and homelessness was one of the issues discussed. Students really enjoyed the book, 'How to Steal a Dog.'

Community Survey Shows Support for School Updates
More than 3,200 residents responded to the survey and voiced strong support for the proposed $29 million referendum. The funds would be used to improve safety and security in District schools, update aging infrastructure and improve educational spaces throughout the District.
Lincoln-Erdman Elementary Holds Annual Geography Bee
On Friday, May 6, Lincoln-Erdman Elementary School held its 2016 Geography Bee. It was a battle all the way to the finish! Finishing in first place was 5th grader Mason Novak. In second place was 5th grader Meghan Haas, and third place was a tie between 5th grader Andrew Stonehouse and 4th grader Bryce Mathes. Other finalists included in the competition were Betty Quasius, Samuel Klassy, Caleb Webb, Jack Little, Roberto Reyes, Riley McNeil, Brady Baker, and Nicky Pena. Congratulations to all the finalists on a job well done! Also, a thank you must go out to Mr. Washuleski, Intervention Specialist, Ms. Barttelt principal, and all the other teachers and staff for helping to make this event a success!

This year, Central High School students had a unique opportunity to enroll in specialty courses over a 4 week interim, with topics such as genetics, paper engineering, wood burning, yearbook, Pinterest math and cake decorating among others. The winterim was a shortened term offered between first and second semester, with extended class periods allowing for more in-depth study.

Wilson Students Study Dia de los Muertos, Create Traditional Artwork
Students at Wilson Elementary School recently learned about the Spanish tradition Dia de los Muertos known to many as the Day of the Dead. This project consisted of three grade levels making artwork for the hallway display. Sugar skull designs were created by 4th grade students, Papel Picados (tissue paper banners) were created by 3rd grade students and skeleton creatures were created by kindergarten students.

North High to Host Community Veterans' Day Program
North and South High Schools will join together with area veterans? organizations to honor our veterans who served in the armed forces at a Community Veterans? Day program on Wednesday, November 11 at Sheboygan North High School. Doors will open to the public at 9:00 a.m. with the program scheduled for presentation at 9:30 a.m.

SASD Schools Receive Grant from Action for Healthy Kids
The Sheboygan Area School District (SASD) is a proud recipient of a $37,800 grant from Action for Healthy Kids® (AFHK) for the 2015-2016 school year. The grant is made possible by Kellogg?s® to improve schools? nutritional environments and increase participation in the national School Breakfast Program through expanded alternative school breakfast programs.
Board of Education Adopts 2015-16 Budget
On Tuesday, October 27, the Board of Education approved the 2015-16 balanced budget in the amount of $132,362,983. The Board of Education also certified the tax levy in the amount of $39,053,604, which is a 3.66% decrease from last year. The mill rate will decrease $0.30 from $12.18 to $11.88 per $1,000 of home valuation.
Clarification: Additional State Aid is Not New Revenue for SASD
It is important to clarify that increases in state aid do not result in additional revenue for the school district. State aid funds are used to reduce the local taxes that are levied by the District.

SASD Partners with Local Employers to Expand Skilled Trades Education
With several Sheboygan area manufacturers projecting a significant shortage in skilled trade and technical production workers over the next decade, and local schools reporting that 40 percent of their high school students do not enroll in any post-secondary institution, the Sheboygan Area School District (SASD) and area employers have unveiled a multi-million dollar investment to and improve skilled trades education and market technical careers.

IDEAS Students Travel to Nicaragua to Learn, Serve
IDEAS Academy Spanish students spent nine days in Granada, Nicaragua as part of a language immersion and service-learning experience. From June 15 to June 23, fifteen students and two teachers lived with host families, attended Spanish language classes at Ave Nicaraguita Spanish School, and volunteered to help local students with their studies in Spanish and English.
SASD Board of Education Approves Amended Property Sale
At the regular Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, July 28, the Board approved the amended and restated real estate purchase agreement to Aurora Health Care. There were minor adjustments to the east parcel field plans to minimize impact on wetlands.

Congratulations to Mr. Frank Juarez who has been selected as the 2015 Wisconsin Art Educator of the Year by the Wisconsin Art Education Association (WAEA). Art Educator of the Year is awarded to a WAEA member who has significantly demonstrated a long-term contribution to the WAEA and art education on the local, state and national levels.
