Dr. Sheehan to Continue as Superintendent of Sheboygan Area School District
February 2, 2017 - Dr. Joseph Sheehan will continue to serve as Superintendent of the Sheboygan Area School District (SASD) through the 2017-18 academic year, SASD Board of Education President Marcia Reinthaler announced today.
Sheehan had previously announced his retirement following this academic year. This past Tuesday, the SASD Board of Education interviewed two finalists for the superintendent position. The board decided not to move either candidate forward in the search process, and also decided to approach Sheehan about serving as superintendent for an additional year.
Discussions between Sheehan and Reinthaler occurred on Wednesday, and on Thursday. After discussions with his family, Dr. Sheehan has agreed to remain superintendent.
“We are excited that Dr. Sheehan has agreed to continue to serve our district,” Reinthaler said. “Our community has benefitted so much from his leadership, and we are thankful that he still has a strong desire to help us keep moving forward.”
Reinthaler said the board will be having discussions with Sheehan in the coming months about next steps regarding the district’s top leadership post.
“Once we determine the process we will use to find a replacement for Dr. Sheehan, we will share that with our employees and our community,” Reinthaler said. “The process we used to conduct this search worked perfectly, we just ended up with a different outcome than we expected.”

Dr. Sheehan Announces Retirement
In February 2016, Dr. Joseph Sheehan announced he would be retiring as Superintendent of the Sheboygan Area School District at the end of the 2016-2017 school year. Dr. Sheehan has served in the Sheboygan Area School District for 27 years including one year as the Assistant Principal at Urban Middle School, four years as Principal of James Madison Elementary School and four years as Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources before moving into the Superintendent role for the last 17 years.
Sheehan is making this announcement early to give the Board of Education time for a thorough process to find his replacement.
Under Sheehan’s leadership, the District has evolved to provide tremendous opportunities for students and families, while maintaining a mindset of working together.
In an email to Sheboygan Area School District staff members, Sheehan said, “During my time as Superintendent, I have had the privilege of working with so many creative, dedicated and caring people. I am announcing my retirement now knowing that I leave the District in incredible hands – yours.”
