The 2012-2013 budget was passed at the October 23 Board of Education meeting. In a special session on Tuesday, October 16, the Board of Education held a public hearing on the 2012-2013 budget. Administration presented an overview of the budget as outlined in the 2012-2013 Budget presentation. The Sheboygan Area School District will receive more state aid for the 2012-2013 school year, due in part to an increase in the number of students enrolled. The equalized tax rate will decrease from last year’s $11.70 to $11.61 this year, reflecting a .77 percent decrease (note: tax rates vary by municipality). The district is $888,469 over budget for the 2012-13 school year due in part to the 2011-13 biennial budget passed by Gov. Scott Walker in 2011, which cut general school aid by 8.1 percent. Money will come from the fund balance to cover the budget shortfall. Future budget projections indicate the SASD will continue to face significant necessary budget reductions in order to balance an annual budget and remain fiscally sound.
