Cleveland Elementary School third and fourth graders recently went on a field trip to the Sheboygan County Historical Museum to learn about Native Americans in Wisconsin and the Sheboygan area. While at the museum, students learned about the different tribes who had lived in Wisconsin and the Sheboygan are, they participated in a pow-wow, and they had the opportunity to do many hands-on activities so they could experience what life was like for the learned how life was for the Native Americans.
During the morning students learned about Mother Nature and chopped corn, made cornhusk dolls, practiced lashing sticks, made arrows and weaved baskets. During the afternoon session, students learned about trading with the Europeans. Afternoon activities included carrying a cradle board, making jingle bracelets for the pow-wow, learning methods of starting fires, practicing decoding languages, and making beaded bracelets.
