Cleveland Students Join Worldwide Effort to Clean Up Beaches
Cleveland Elementary School 5th grade students and their teacher Randy
Sohn joined a worldwide effort on September 16 by cleaning up Hika Bay
Park in Cleveland. Students picked up, charted, and bagged debris and
then graphed the types of debris they found. Cigarettes, plastic items,
and bits of paper were the most common. The experience was tied into a
science lesson, where students discussed about how this affects the
environment for people and animals.
The beach clean-up was in conjunction with the International Coastal
Cleanup (ICC), a annual worldwide event coordinated by the Alliance for
the Great Lakes. Each year, over 450,000 people worldwide pick-up over 4
million pounds of garbage on beaches and rivers. This was the 7th year
that Cleveland students participated in the beach clean-up program.
