Cleveland Above the Influence Group Teaches Lesson with Skit
Members of Cleveland Elementary School’s Above the Influence group recently put on a peer pressure skit at an all school assembly. Students did not speak any words but showed through their actions how to include and be kind to others. The skit was performed to the song "Under my Umbrella" by Train. The message of the skit was to let your friends stand "under your umbrella" when they are left out of a group or feeling pressured to do something they don't want to do. A real umbrella was used as a symbol of friendship whenever a student helped a friend say no to peer pressure and make a more positive choice.
The situations portrayed in the skit were teasing, excluding, stealing, and smoking. Each time someone was pressured to do something wrong, unhealthy, or mean, a friend would come with the umbrella to help them make a good choice instead of giving in to the pressure. The skits showed it is easier to withstand peer pressure when you have friends that stand by you and do the right thing. It taught students to be a good friend and use positive peer pressure to help others make good choices.
The students also coordinated a poster contest to extend the learning beyond the skit.
