Cooper Third Graders Harvest Seeds

On Tuesday, November 16, Cooper Elementary third graders harvested the seeds of the Wisconsin Fast Plants from the plants that the students had planted six weeks ago. The classes planted a total of 360 seeds, and harvested 1,781 seeds.

The Wisconsin Fast Plant used in this science project was developed at the University of Wisconsin-Madison for the purpose of studying plant diseases. It grows well in a crowded place and produces a lot of pollen and seeds. Using actual dead bees, the children were able to pollinate the flowers produced on the plants, which in turn produced seedpods containing numerous seeds. During the six-week science project, the children were able to observe the changes plants make, and learn about bees.
