Family Involvement
Family involvement is a critical component of early childhood programs at the Early Learning Center. Parents are the first and most important teachers of their children. Therefore, it is essential that they be actively involved in their children's education. A variety of family involvement options are available. Examples include: parent education workshops, opportunities to volunteer in the classroom and parent-child activities.

Why is family involvement important?
Experts say "the single most important determinant of a child's success in schools is:

  • not family status
  • not family education level
  • not income

But whether that child's parents are involved in his/her education. Studies consistently link parent involvement with:

  • higher student grades and test scores
  • more positive student attitudes and behaviors and
  • improved school climates

Parents are the first and most important teachers of their children. It is only through a partnership between families and schools that children can successfully prepare for life in the next century.

What can a parent do?

  • Set a good example. Read to your children or listen to them read on a regular basis.
  • Frequently ask your children about school.
  • Proudly display samples of your children's school work in your home.
  • Communicate often with your children's teachers. Talk to them when everything is going well; not just when there is a problem. Attend school activities, programs, conferences, and meetings. Volunteer when you can.
  • Set high goals for your children. Encourage a love and positive expectations of school in your children.
  • Turn off the television! Limit the amount of time your children watch television and monitor the quality of what is being seen.
