ELC Collects “Pennies for Books”
The Early Learning Center (ELC) has launched a ‘Pennies for Books’ campaign to raise money to purchase quality reading books for the students at the school. Students were asked to look for pennies in their home and donate the pennies to help purchase books for each of the 650 students enrolled at ELC. The campaign began on February 20 and will conclude on April 5. Through the generosity of students and families, the ELC has already raised $700.
For over 20 years, the Early Learning Center (ELC) has relied on the Reading is Fundamental (RIF) program to provide three free books for each student. Recently, the federal funding for RIF has been cut and the ELC can no longer rely on these funds to help get books in the hands of Sheboygan’s youngest school-aged students.
In addition to requesting that families donate pennies for books, the school has asked local south-side Sheboygan businesses to match some of the funds.
Due to the early success of the Pennies for Books campaign, the ELC is hoping to make this an annual event to replace the RIF funding the school used to receive. The ELC staff would like to thank the students and families of the ELC for their generous donations to help get books in the hands and homes of students.
