The Sheboygan Area School District, Plymouth School District, and Nourish have collaborated to offer "Harvest of the Month" to students. Each month during the school year, a fruit or vegetable is featured on both SASD and Plymouth school menus. Nourish also incorporates the Harvest of the Month into their after school snack programs offered at select SASD and PSD schools. The featured item is purchased as local as possible. When possible, each district provides information about the farm where the item was harvested from. The item will be served raw, cooked with added seasonings, or incorporated into a new recipe for students to try.
The goal of Harvest of the Month is to highlight a different produce item each month in order to increase fruit and vegetable consumption and create a stronger connection with local farmers. Harvest of the Month presents a strategic opportunity to bring together the classroom, cafeteria, home and community to promote the common goal supporting students in developing healthier habits.
The Classroom Connect Newsletter contains background information and facts as well as additional resources to explore each featured produce item. It provides educators with tools and ideas for creative physical, hands-on activities and open-ended exploration by students that support developmental skills.
The Community Connect Newsletter takes Harvest of the Month from school to the home, allowing students and their families to share the experience. Each newsletter contains general nutrition information and tips for selecting, storing and serving the featured produce item to encourage healthy food choices and increase fruit and vegetable consumption. A Harvest of the Month recipe and shopping tips are also included to provide families with tools to engage in celebrating the season!
Monthly we also share a recipe that is posted with the Harvest of the Month Produce at Festival Foods in Sheboygan and other community locations throughout Sheboygan and Plymouth.
