The Wisconsin Character Education Partnership (WCEP) recently announced that the Grant School Family (Grant Elementary School and the Elementary School for the Arts and Academics) is one of three schools in the state to be honored as a Wisconsin Emerging School of Character for 2009. This award is sponsored by the Wisconsin Character Education Partnership in partnership with the Character Education Partnership (CEP), which seeks to recognize schools or districts for their work in encouraging the ethical, social and academic growth of their students through effective character education. The Emerging School of Character award is recognition for The Grant School Family for their excellent work in character education, their well-established best practices, and the strong evidence that they are making good progress in the integration of character education in their schools.
The Wisconsin Character Education Partnership has also selected Grant Elementary School and the Elementary School for Arts and Academics- The Grant School Family- to receive the 2009 Promising Practice Award for their character education initiatives. The eleven Wisconsin schools that have received this award have developed unique and specific programs that represent best practices in character education.
The Grant School Family engages their families as partners in character building with the "Character Connections" or family homework. Each month Family Meetings introduce the character-related theme and focus. Parents are encouraged to attend these Friday morning meetings, but for those who are unable, information and activities are sent home with students for the adults to use to build on the school lessons.
The Grant School Family was honored on June 16, 2009 at the Focus on Character Conference at the Country Springs Hotel & Conference Center, Waukesha, Wisconsin
The award winning schools received scholarships to attend this conference along with a pre-conference workshop providing additional staff development in the effective elements of character education for their schools.
The Grant School Family joins the ranks of Wisconsin Schools recognized by WCEP over the past three years for their character education programs. WCEP promotes the intentional, proactive teaching of character to K-12 students and supports the role of community, parents and educators as key stakeholders in developing character education programs in their schools
