Students from Jackson Elementary School learned a lot from their visit with VPI employee, Gloria Toutenhoofd, a Junior Achievement volunteer.
Toutenhoofd taught five lessons to the second graders in Kay Kertscher's classroom: how a community works; how a donut factory works via an assembly line; the role of government in a community and how to begin a business.
Through the programs students were taught about taxation and were able to experience it with money they "earned" for working the doughnut factory. The students had to pay taxes with the salary they made. Some children were picked as government workers and were paid with the tax money collected.
