One Hundred Ninety-Six 5th Graders to Be Honored with President's Award for Educational Excellence

Academic student achievement and hard work will be celebrated on Thursday, May 7, when 196 5th grade Sheboygan Area School District (SASD) students will be receiving the President's Award for Educational Excellence.

The awards ceremony, which starts at 6:00 P.M., will be held in the Sheboygan South High School auditorium. Each student will receive a lapel pin and a certificate signed by President Barack Obama, the U.S. Secretary of Education, and the student's building principal. A list of all the awardees will be posted in each elementary school and will be published in the April 30th issue of the Lakeshore Family magazine.

Seth Harvatine, Longfellow Elementary School principal and organizer of the event, is scheduled to read a letter sent from President Obama. Joe Sheehan, SASD Superintendent, is the guest speaker for the event. Sheehan commented, "We congratulate the students and their parents for the accomplishments that these students have achieved. These students are positive role models for their classmates and for their younger brothers and sisters." Sheehan added, " We congratulate the students and their moms and dads on this outstanding accomplishment."

Since 1983, the program has provided individual recognition from the President and the U.S. Secretary of Education to those students whose outstanding efforts enable them to meet challenging standards of excellence. To qualify for this award, students must meet two requirements. Students must earn at least a B+ average during fourth grade and first semester of fifth grade. Students also had to have a test score that was at or above the 85th percentile level in either math or reading on the Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Exam that is administered statewide to all fourth grade students.

A reception to honor the awardees will follow the ceremony. The public is invited.
