Longfellow Third Graders Given Reading Buddies
Johanna Johnson reads to
third graders at Longfellow
Funded through a grant from Thrivent, the students in Julie Hauck's third grade classroom at Longfellow Elementary School are given a unique reading opportunity this school year. The six week program, called "Reading Buddies," provides each student materials to develop an ‘at home' reading buddy system. The students read each week, in small groups, with Johanna Johnson, one of Longfellow's Foster Grandparents.
While reading, the students can hold their reading buddy, which is a plush dog. After each week's session, the students are given a book that they may keep. The goal of the program is to instill in students the motivation and materials to read to a buddy at home. "Reading Buddies" is a natural extension of "Pages for Preston," a Therapy Dog Reading Program run by Julie Hauck. Her third graders read each week to Preston, Hauck's therapy dog, while incorporating Thrivent's Reading Buddies and books into "Pages for Preston".
