The eleventh annual Sheboygan Area School District (SASD) Battle of the Books competition recently took place at Jefferson Elementary School. This literacy competition is designed to motivate students to read and have fun doing so. In addition, the Battle of the Books encourages book discussions, while promoting responsibility and cooperative behavior. The coordinators of the 2010 Battle of the Books competition were Lori Roelse, Longfellow Elementary and Holly Hansen-Grotbeck, Sheridan Elementary.
Each year teams of students are formed with students representing different elementary schools. Each team member is responsible for reading nine books from a list of 27 assigned books. The books cover a variety of levels, genres and interests.
The 2010 competition consisted of 58 teams of fifth graders, who came came from Cleveland, Cooper, ESAA, Jackson, Jefferson, Lake Country, Lincoln-Erdman, Madison, Sheridan and Wilson. The top twenty teams were recognized with individual ribbons, medals or trophies.
