James Madison Elementary School second grade students often read to their teachers, parents, and classroom volunteers. This year the students had a special reading buddytheir own stuffed animal.
Thanks to donations from Thrivent Financial and volunteers from the Foster Grandparent Program, each second grader at James Madison received a stuffed animal "reading buddy" along with four new books.
Over a period of six weeks, a Foster Grandparent read with the children and their animals. Once a rapport was established, the children took their reading buddies home to continue this shared literacy experience. The program is designed to encourage and support reading at home.
