James Madison Students Study Native American Culture
After selecting a Native American tribe, the third graders in Mrs. Else Allen’s class at James Madison School, completed their reports and projects which show a model of their chosen tribe's home. A study of Native Americans in Sheboygan and across the United States helped students to better understand these first Americans.
The unit was Social Studies-based, as it explores an ethnic group, but it also covered research skills using books and computers and language arts skills in writing and organizing information for a report. Students selected a tribe by looking at all of the books and materials available from the school library.
Not only was this project engaging for the students, the entire assignment allowed for differentiation in the classroom as the information and complexity of models varied in difficulty.
