Two SASD Teachers Honored by Herb Kohl Foundation
The Sheboygan Area School District is proud to announce two teachers have been honored as Herb Kohl Foundation Fellowship recipients. Congratulations to Sylvia Nicora, teacher at North High School, and Therese Urben, teacher at James Madison Elementary School, for their achievement.

photo Ms. Nicora teaches social studies at North High School. She has led North High‘s involvement in the National History Day program and she also collaborates with teachers at North High’s sister school in France. Jason Bull, principal of North High School said, “Sylvia positively impacts staff and students alike through her commitment to rigor, reflection and a love of learning built on a foundation of deep meaningful relationships.  These qualities, skills and attributes make Sylvia a true asset to North High and the larger Sheboygan community.”



photoMs. Urben teaches second grade at James Madison Elementary School. She is the facilitator of the SASD Technology Mentor program and is also a Learning Leader in her building. Ms. Urben received National Board Certification in the 2008-09 school year. Dr. Matt Driscoll, James Madison Elementary School Principal said, “Therese Urben epitomizes what all teachers strive to become, but only a few achieve;  a teacher with a passion for life-long learning who passes that passion and knowledge for learning onto her students using exciting, fun and research-based instructional strategies.”


The Herb Kohl Foundation Fellowship rewards teachers who have demonstrated superior ability to inspire love of learning in their students, have motivated others, and have provided meritorious service both inside and outside the classroom. Each teacher will receive a $1,000 Fellowship and an additional $1,000 grant will be awarded to the teacher’s school for use in innovative educational projects. The Herb Kohl Foundation will award 100 fellowships throughout the state this year.
