Native American Dancer Kicks Off Lincoln-Erdman's Enrichment Programming

On Sept. 24, 1:30 p.m., Lincoln-Erdman Elementary School will come alive with sounds of Native American music and language with the visit of Larry Yazzie of the Meskwaki Tribe of Native Americans.

The performance is part of the school's enrichment programming.

Yazzie will present his World Champion Native American Fancy Dance, sang in the Northern Plains style, and will retell stories in the Meskwaki tradition.

The Meskwaki Tribe of Native Americans is an Algonkian language speaking group that has merged with the Sac Tribe.

As part of the performance Yazzie represents the "Manitus," the spirits of the animals represented in his outfit. He dances for his ancestors, those who have come before and those who can no longer dance. Yazzie says, "I dance for them and with them!"

Among other places, Yazzie has performed at the Olympics, Goodwill Games and Macy's Thanksgiving Parade.
