A 4th grade student enrolled in the Elementary School for Arts and Academics (ESAA) received first place in her age group in the Milwaukee Public Television Summer Vacation Station 2008 Art Competition.
Thirteen young artists were selected from across the state of Wisconsin. This student was one of three students to receive first place. Built around a block of programs for 6-12 year old children, Vacation Station provides opportunities to encourage success through the arts and academics.
The theme of the 2008 summer vacation program, "Bugs, Butterflies and Backyard Fun!" paralleled the 2008 theme of the library reading program throughout the state. Winners were selected on the basis of originality, quality of work and age considerations.
The winning painting, entitled "Bug Dance", celebrates the world of insects as they join in a festive dance, complete with the drama of a colorful set design including stage lights to accentuate the dancing insects. An on-air interstitial featuring the thirteen winning entries will air during program breaks on MPTV channels 10 & 36 through May 2009.
This award is a reflection of the artistic and academic excellence provided students through ESAA, which is a charter school engaging students in critical thinking and aesthetic inquiry as they collaborate with teams of instructors as the arts are infused into academic disciplines.
