Wild About Reading" is the theme of Longfellow Elementary School's
weeklong fund-raising contest. The students get to select their
favorite wild reader, an animal belonging to staff members.
The staff has taken pictures of their pets reading books; there is even a photo of a fish reading One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish.
vote for their favorite photo students, and staff, must pay a penny.
One penny equals one vote and the number of votes allowed is limitless.
The proceeds from the voting will be used to adopt a manatee.
attending conferences next week will have the chance to view the
photos, which are on display in the school's library until Monday,
November 24. The winning photo will be declared before Thanksgiving
Manatees are gentle water
mammals, similar to a seal or sea lion, which are protected by the
Endangered Species Act. Once Longfellow gets its own manatee, students
will be able to track its movements through a website and will get
regular updates, photos and a newsletter.
