Horace Mann Students Participate in State Honors Band Program

Three band students from Horace Mann Middle School participated in the St. Norbert College Honors Band on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2008 in DePere, Wis.

Participants included eighth graders James L. and Rachel P. and seventh grader Melissa L. The young musicians spent the day in rehearsals and sectionals for most of the day and played a concert for the public at 4 p.m.

"I liked it because it was a challenge and it was important to go because I was inspired by the other kids who played well," said Melissa.

Honors bands provide additional music education opportunities for band students. The St. Norbert College Honors Band is made up of top musical band kids from Wisconsin schools. The students get to work and play at a higher level of learning enhancing their musicality.

"It was fun working with kids from other schools and the composer of the pieces we played. It was a super experience and I'm glad I was able to go," Rachel said.

"This gathering illustrates the great things music students are known for," said Stephanie Traska, band director. "Colleges and scholarship donors look for these kids because they know how talented and self-disciplined they are."
