Grant and ESAA Win State Award

The Wisconsin Character Education Partnership (WCEP) has selected Grant Elementary School and the Elementary School for Arts and Academics -- The Grant School Family -- to receive the 2009 Promising Practice Award for their character education initiatives.

The Grant School Family will be honored on June 16, 2009 at the Focus on Character Conference at the Country Springs Hotel & Conference Center, Waukesha, Wis.

The 11 Wisconsin schools that have received this award have developed unique and specific programs that represent best practices in character education. This award, sponsored by the Wisconsin Character Education Partnership in partnership with the Character Education Partnership (CEP) seeks to recognize schools or districts for their work in encouraging the ethical, social and academic growth of their students through effective character education.

The Grant School Family engages their families as partners in character building with the "Character Connections" or family homework. Each month Family Meetings introduce the character-related theme and focus. Parents are encouraged to attend these Friday morning meetings, but for those who are unable, information and activities are sent home with students for the adults to use to build on the school lessons.

The award-winning schools will receive scholarships to attend the Focus on Character Conference along with a pre-conference workshop providing additional staff development in the effective elements of character education for their schools.

These schools join the ranks of Wisconsin Schools recognized by WCEP over the past three years for their character education programs. WCEP promotes the intentional, proactive teaching of character to K-12 students and supports the role of community, parents and educators as key stakeholders in developing character education programs in their schools.
