Cleveland Students Participate in the Coastal Management Beach Sweep
A group of 18 fifth grade students from Cleveland Elementary School enjoyed a walk to and from Hika Bay Park in Cleveland to pick up and chart debris collected on the beach.
The beach cleanup event was part of the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC); a worldwide event coordinated each year in the fall by the Ocean Conservancy. Each year it is estimated that over 450,000 people worldwide pick-up over 4 million pounds of garbage on beaches and rivers.
This year the Cleveland students walked to the beach and picked up an estimated 20 pounds of garbage from Hika Bay beach in Cleveland. The ICC has been collecting data from the debris collected on beaches and waterways around the world since 1986. Wisconsin has been participating in the Great Lakes region of ICC since 1989. This was the fifth year that Cleveland students participated in the Beach Sweep program.
