Sled Dogs Entertain and Educate Cleveland and Montessori Students
On Friday, November 13th the students and faculty of Cleveland Elementary and N.E.W. Montessori School hosted a presentation at the school entitled Sled Dog Sports, "Dog Power in Action," The sled dogs were accompanied by Cliff Henning of Cleveland-based Dazzle Dog Kennel. Henning spoke to the group about the types of dogs used for mushing, equipment used, and the various sports in which sled dogs and mushers participate. He explained to the audience some of the details of sled dog racing, including the preparation that goes into the Iditarod race in Alaska.
The indoor presentation was followed by an outdoor demonstration where two students demonstrated bikejoring and canicross with dogs Razzle, Sage, Vinnie and Patrick to the students and staff. One student rode on his bike to demonstrate the bikejoring with the dogs pulling his bike around a course on the playground. The other student ran with the dogs to show the canicross to the group. All of the dogs at Dazzle Dog Kennel are retired Alaskan Huskies. Both Vinnie and Razzle are Iditarod veterans.
The students studied the topic and read the books Race Across Alaska and Balto in preparation for the visit from Cliff and his Alaskan Huskies.
