In honor of Veterans, fifth grade students at Wilson Elementary School performed an African Drum ensemble for 11 minutes on November 11, 2009, Veterans Day. Students and parents gathered in the central foyer as all three fifth grade classes took turns playing a continuous musical tribute.
Carolyn Auguston, Wilson music teacher and Tom Binder, Wilson principal, designed the performance as a tribute to the courage and patriotism of our veterans.
Students began studying World Drumming earlier in the school year. Objectives of the World Music Drumming project are to bring the excitement of world music and drumming to students, teach African and Latin - American culture, and build skills such as communication and listening, cooperative teamwork, and respect for others.
Auguston, along with two other SASD music teachers, Katy Ries and Sue Hildebrand, wrote and received a grant in 2005 from the Sheboygan Public Education Foundation. Rotating the drums between the three teachers' assigned schools throughout the school year allows an average of 1,200 students to benefit.
