New Records Set at Fifth Grade Sports Day
The Physical Education teachers of the Sheboygan Area School District (SASD) held the 26th annual fifth grade sports day on Thursday, May 27, at South High School. During this event, all SASD fifth graders participate in track and field events. The day focuses on sportsmanship and having fun rather than competition. A trophy is given to the school that shows great sportsmanship throughout the day and is voted for by staff. Sheridan was the recipient of the sportsmanship trophy this year.
Although competition is not the focus, there were many great performances and the day was a huge success. In the past six years there has only been one record broken, but this year there were four new records set. Aashe V., a fifth grader from Washington, set a new record in boys discuss throw. He threw the disc 217' 6". The previous record, which was set in 2000, was 188'. Brady R., a Grant student, set a new record in the boys 400m run with a time of 1:05.88. The previous record was 1:07.84 set in 2000. Emily S. from Cleveland broke the girls 75m record with a time of 10.02. The previous record was set in 1999 in a time of 10.88. A new record was also set in the girls' 100m run set by Sierra K. from James Madison in a time of 14.30. The previous record was 14.34 set in 1998.
