James Madison Students Get Inspirational Opportunity
James Madison Elementary School fourth and fifth graders recently had the opportunity to visit with two special guests - Wisconsin author and storyteller Bob Kann, and the subject of his latest book Cindy Bentley: Spirit of a Champion. Cindy Bentley is an athlete in the Special Olympics and advocate for those with disabilities.
Bentley was born in Milwaukee to a drug-addicted mother. Against the odds, and with the encouragement of a teacher at the Southern Wisconsin Center for the Developmentally Disabled, she realized her deep passion for sports and developed the discipline to train and compete. She now advocates for people with disabilities and encourages them to find their voice and to know their rights.
The students read the book prior to the assembly and were allowed to have a 30-40 minute question and answer session with Ms. Bentley and Mr. Kann.
For more information on Cindy Bentley and Kann's book about her, visit the Wisconsin Historial Society's website.
