Thorpe Named Wisconsin NHD Teacher of the Year
Tom Thorpe, eighth grade social studies teacher at Horace Mann Middle School, has been selected as the Junior Division National History Day (NHD) Wisconsin Teacher of the Year. This award, which is sponsored by Patricia Behring, includes a $500 prize.
The award recognizes one outstanding junior division NHD teacher. Thorpe was selected for his commitment to National History Day and high quality history education. He received the award in Madison on Saturday May 7 during the 2011 National History Day state competition.
National History Day is an academic enrichment program for students who are in grades 6-12. Students select topics connected to an annual theme and complete their own in-depth research on the topic. During the competition, they present their conclusions by creating museum-style exhibits, media documentaries, research papers, interactive websites, and dramatic performances. Participation in the program continues to grow with more than 500,000 students participating annually across the nation. The Wisconsin Historical Society coordinates the National History Day program in Wisconsin.
Horace Mann has been involved in the National History Day competition for eight years.
