Three SASD Schools Selected as Schools of Merit for Positive Behavior Program
Grant, Longfellow and Sheridan Elementary Schools have been selected as Schools of Merit by the Wisconsin PBIS Network for the tremendous work accomplished through the implementation of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS).  The schools were three of only 23 schools state-wide to receive the prestigious award. The 23 award-winning schools are among the nearly 800 schools trained and almost 700 implementing PBIS in Wisconsin. All three elementary schools are in their third year of implementing PBIS.

PBIS is a school-wide systematic approach for teaching and supporting appropriate school behavior. PBIS acknowledges students who display appropriate behaviors and offers increasing levels of support for students who are having difficulty. Staff members teach and re-teach the expectations, as they would with an academic subject area, rather than to assume that students should know what is expected of them.

PBIS sets clear expectations for behavior in all areas of the building, such as hallways, lunchroom, playgrounds and so on. Each school chooses how to acknowledge and reward students for displaying good behavior, such as pizza parties, extra free time or a special field trip. Schools continuously collect data to track and monitor the effectiveness of the program and adjust practices accordingly.

Teaching, modeling, and reinforcing positive social behavior is an important step of a student’s educational experience. Teaching behavioral expectations and rewarding students for following them is a much more positive approach than waiting for misbehavior to occur before responding.  The purpose of a school-wide PBIS is to establish a climate in which appropriate behavior is the norm. Overall, this will improve the learning environment for our students. Research shows that when behavior issues are decreased, academic performance will increase.

The Sheboygan Area School District is in the third year of training and implementation PBIS in our schools. Jefferson, Longfellow, Grant and Sheridan Elementary Schools were the first four schools in the SASD to be trained in the program. These schools have done an excellent job using the PBIS program and have been recognized by the Wisconsin PBIS Network as Exemplar Schools. In turn, each Exemplar School could apply for the School of Merit recognition.

James Madison, Pigeon River, Jackson, and Cleveland Elementary Schools as well as Farnsworth Middle School will implement the program this school year. As outlined in Goal 2 in the SASD Long Range Plan, PBIS will be implemented in all schools by the 2014-15 school year.
