Farnsworth Activity Night Provides Safe, Fun Student Entertainment

On September 16th, Farnsworth Middle School Student Council held its first Student Activity Night of the school year.  Five times a year, student council organizes and runs an evening full of dancing, dodge ball, basketball, dunk tanks, bounce houses, food and more. The first activity night of the year drew a crowd of approximately 300 students from sixth, seventh, and eighth grades.

“The purpose of activity night is to provide a safe and fun activity for Farnsworth students on a Friday night. By providing an environment in which the students can socialize and interact in safe and appropriate ways, we help to strengthen the community atmosphere of our school,” said Adam Binder, Student Council co-advisor.  Student Council members put in many hours preparing and planning each activity night.  The event is chaperoned by staff members, but completely student-run. Student Council members plan the theme, order the supplies, organize the activities, play the music, sell food and more. The students plan the events as a service to their school.

Over the past 5 years, student activity nights have become an institution at Farnsworth. Farnsworth is the only middle school in to provide this type of event on a regular basis.  In addition to providing the students with a positive activity, activity night builds and develops the leadership skills of Student Council.  The members learn to plan and organize events while providing a service for their classmates. To Student Council Vice President Erin Gamb, activity night is about providing a safe place to “hang out” with friends. Gamb said, “Activity night is a safe and fun place for Farnsworth students to get together, have a good time, and meet new people.  I love being able to see everyone who goes to our school and hang out with them outside of school.”

The next Student Activity Night will take place November 11th at Farnsworth Middle School.
