[hotoOn November 11, the students in grades 3-5 at Jefferson Elementary School were honored to welcome Bill Breyfogle for the Veteran's Day program in the gym.  Bill is a retired Navy officer and shared his story about his time in the service and why it is important to honor the veterans not only on November 11th, but on all days.

photoStudents in The Mosaic School Spanish classes researched El Día de los Muertos, a Mexican holiday observed throughout Mexico and around the world in other cultures. After discovering the differences between Halloween and the Mexican holiday, students celebrated by molding and decorating "Calaveras de Azúcar." Sugar Skulls are a traditional folk art from Southern Mexico used to celebrate Day of the Dead.

photoLongfellow Elementary School recognized students for showing respect at school as Citizens of the Month for October. The students are nominated based on their respect for themselves by staying focused, getting their work in on time and getting to school on time. They showed respect for others by helping other students and staff members in various ways. They demonstrated respect for the environment by taking care of materials and cleaning up areas other than their own space.

Elementary School for the Arts and Academics (ESAA) 4th and 5th graders have been discussing an essential question, “How do we work together for a common purpose?” Through a variety of image poses in drama class, students were able to connect this essential question to their own perception of learning. As thinking deepened, student poses evolved into a collaborative environment with each student assuming a different role necessary for learning to take place.

photoOn October 24th, Pigeon River hosted their annual Fall Fun Night.  Students and their families trick-or-treated through their classroom halls that that had been magically transformed by the Pigeon River teachers into festively lit and decorated corridors.  In the gym there were refreshments and many themed crafts and activities such as Boo Bowling, Pumpkin Golf, a Candy Count and Pumpkin Cookie Cut-out Decorating.  The Pigeon River PTO sponsored the spooktacular event.

On October 24th, the Lincoln-Erdman Elementary School PTO sponsored a Halloween Costume Party.  Families had a chance to play games, walk the “haunted” LEEF Trail and participate in a Cake Walk. A brat fry was held with all profits going towards the Lincoln-Erdman Scholarship Fund. This annual event is well-attended by Lincoln-Erdman families and is a favorite for the students!

photoKindergarten students in Sherri Morgan's class at Wilson Elementary School learned a new vocabulary word yesterday -  Veteran - and what it means to be a veteran. Doris Dallas, from the VFW Ladies Auxiliary in Sheboygan has a grand-daughter Mrs. Morgan's classroom and she generously offered to deliver little American flags and pencils with the Pledge of Allegiance written on it to all four kindergarten classrooms. Mrs. Morgan said the students loved it because they have just learned to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. "We recite The Pledge every morning and now my kindergarten students can say it with confidence." Some of her students have even volunteered in the office to lead the Pledge over the loud speaker with morning announcements.

Farnsworth Middle School students in Mrs. Wendy Henschel's class acted as Jr. Editors-in-Chief of the November 12 issue of News-O-Matic. News-O-Matic is a kids' daily newspaper that goes out across the United States. Via Skype, they assisted Russ Kahn, Editor-in-Chief at Press4Kids in New York by choosing which stories to include in the issue as well as asking questions to be answered in the stories. The issue the students' consulted on was published the very next day.

photoStudents at Cleveland Elementary School recently participated in National Red Ribbon Week. Red Ribbon Week is celebrated to emphasize the importance of not using drugs.  Each classroom designed their own poster and Mr. Stienmetz's third grade class won the poster contest. Their theme was '16 Reasons Why Drug Free Is For Me. Protect Our Future.'

photoCongratulations to Mike Trimberger, South High School Principal who was recently recognized as the Career Pathmaker Administrator by the N.E.W. Manufacturing Alliance.  The third annual NEW Manufacturing Alliance's ‘Excellence in Manufacturing/K-12 Partnerships Awards’ event was held on Tuesday, October 21, 2014 at the KI Convention Center in Green Bay.  The Awards spotlight best practices of manufacturing/education partnerships throughout the New North region.

photoIn Drama class, Elementary School for the Arts and Academics (ESAA) second and third grade students developed their own games after simulating aspects of birds lives which included food gathering and supply and demand. Students worked together to create simulations of their own, drawing on knowledge gained while observing and researching birds on the school’s campus. To create the games students began with an objective, added rules, and then taught the game to the rest of the class.

The students at Grant Elementary School had the opportunity to meet author and illustrator Peter Brown. His visit was sponsored by the PTO and held in conjunction with the Sheboygan Children’s Book Festival. He spoke to the students about how he became a professional author and illustrator. He also shared one of his books and the story behind its creation. Finally, he demonstrated how he makes his illustrations. Students prepared for his visit by reading his books and creating an art project connected to his work.

On October 17th, all of the students and staff from Pigeon River Elementary School visited the Milwaukee County Zoo as a result of applying for and receiving the "Let Education Meet Imagination" field trip grant from Kohl's Cares. This field trip served as an extension to the elementary life science curriculum.  As a PBIS-endorsed event, students also had the opportunity to practice being safe, respectful and responsible in a larger community setting.

North and South High School will be performing Into the Woods by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine for their annual joint musical. It will be performed on Fri. Nov 7, Sat. Nov. 8, Thurs. Nov. 13, Fri. Nov. 14, Sat. Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. and  Sun. Nov. 9 at  2 p.m. in the South High School auditorium.

logoState Superintendent Tony Evers offered congratulations to Grant Elementary School for being among 173 schools in the state that received Wisconsin Title I School of Recognition honors for the 2014-15 school year. “These schools are examples of the success we need in all of our schools to close the achievement gap,” Evers said. The schools were recognized during a special Oct. 13 ceremony at the State Capitol in Madison hosted by Deputy State Superintendent Mike Thompson.

At Jackson Elementary School, Responsibility was September’s character trait. Students selected as students of the month and their parents were invited to a social gathering held at Jackson after the assembly. The 'spotted' students were then recognized at the Top of the Line Assembly and after walking down the red carpet, received a coupon for a meal from Texas Roadhouse and a “Spotted” Student of the Month certificate.

photoIn September, Grant Elementary School held a PBIS Family Kick-off for the new school year.  Families gathered for a hotdog and potluck supper and then participated in a Grant School Family Meeting assembly. The theme of the evening was "Home Routines = School Success!"  Through skits and discussion, students joined staff in sharing the importance of being on-time to school, well-rested, and ready to learn. Families set goals and made plans to help students be successful through positive home routines.

photoOn Friday, October 17th, Kohl’s Wild Theater presented by the Zoological Society of Milwaukee and Kohl’s Cares held an educational performance at Cooper Elementary School.  The entire student body enjoyed a show titled, ‘The Great Global Extravaganza.’  The 30 minute show, utilizing skits and songs, introduced the students to animals from around the globe.  Children also head a message about healthy eating.  The actors and actresses used puppetry, music, and stories to help the audience discover how small actions at home can impact the entire planet.

photoOn October 10th, Jennifer Holland, a senior writer for National Geographic Magazine and the author of the wildly successful Unlikely Friendships, visited Pigeon River Elementary School. During the presentation, Holland shared the inspiring stories found in her books about unexpected animal bonding around the world. In preparation for the author visit, Mr. Ryan Hornickel's art students produced artwork representing their ideas of improbable friendships.

The Board of Education approved a contract with Gorman & Company to purchase the Washington School building for $300,000, contingent on successful zoning and financing of the project. Gorman & Company, a Wisconsin-based company that specializes in re-adaptive reuse of historic schools into apartments, plans to convert the building into multi-family housing.

photoCleveland Elementary School recently named Mrs. Cooper’s kindergarten class as the monthly winner of the 'Being Respectful, Responsible and Safe' trophy. This trophy is awarded to the class that most shows these qualities in all areas of the school, playground and classroom. At the all-school assembly on October 3, the kindergarten students were presented with the trophy and they also received a pizza party from the principal, Mr. Bill Klein.
