Sheboygan North High Culinary Club had a very active, successful first semester. In October, members Hunter Lewis and Kyle Mares were selected for the opportunity to cook along side Destination Kohler chefs at the Annual Food and Wine Event in Kohler. Through this opportunity, the Culinary Club students were successful in fundraising over $1,000 to help cover competition expenses.
In November, the Culinary Club created a gingerbread house for the Kohler Foundation’s Annual Gingerbread Festival at the Waelderhaus. Their creation was the Wheel Well Motel, complete with Lightning McQueen and Mater, from the movie Cars. Picked by popular vote, the group won 1st Place in the Grades 9-12 Division for the 10th year in a row.
On January 21, Kyle Mares competed in Soup Wars, sponsored by Hyper Trails Agility Club, Sheboygan Falls. His Apple Chorizo soup recipe garnered him the 1st Place “People’s Choice” Award. Kyle Mares is pictured with his prize for winning first place in Soup Wars - a four piece carbon steel wok set.
On January 27, Kyle Mares completed the first step, cooking a three course designated menu, in the State Skills USA Culinary Arts Contest at Southwest Technical College in Fennimore, WI. The results from this contest will not be complete until Kyle submits a professional resume and completes step two, the mandatory Culinary Skills written test in April, when competitors will compete in all remaining events at the State Skills USA competition held in Wisconsin Dells.
The remaining members of the North Culinary Club will be actively competing during February and March in the Regional and State FCCLA Star Events and Wisconsin State ProStart® Student Invitational competitions.
