On Tuesday, March 13, Sheboygan North’s Culinary Team competed against 21 other schools at the 2012 Wisconsin ProStart® Student Invitational, during the Wisconsin Restaurant Expo held at the Frontier Airlines Center in Milwaukee. Team members Hunter Lewis, Kyle Mares, Justin Siburt and Alan Speckman placed 4th place out of 22 teams. North team member Kyle Mares won 2nd place, out of over 75 individual competitors, in the Knife Skills Competition portion of the contest. He received a three-piece knife set from ¬Dexter-Russell, Inc.
Teams participating in the culinary competition must demonstrate their creative abilities through the preparation of a three-course meal in only 60 minutes. Their performance during the practical session is observed and rated by judges from leading colleges and universities. The menu prepared by the North team included: Appetizer Course--Alaskan Maki Roll with Sweet Chili Sauce, Arugula Salad, Soy Lemon Vinaigrette; Entrée Course—Curried Lamb Loin with Pomegranate Red Wine Sauce, Minted Apricot Coconut Rice, Sesame Glazed Asparagus; Dessert Course—Chocolate Ginger Mousse, Spiced Pepita Brittle, Orange Caramel and Raspberry Sauces with Macerated Oranges. Adviser for the NHS Culinary Team is Connie Check. Professional Industry Mentors for the Team were chefs, Paul Smitala and Richard Palm.
