The Mosaic Middle School Chess Club placed second out of 15 teams in the sixth- through eighth-grade division of the Sheboygan County Chess Championship on Saturday, Feb. 18. The five-level, six-round, Swiss-style tournament was sponsored by Acuity Charitable Foundation. The four top scores and rankings (out of 74 participants) for the Mosaic team were from sixth-graders: Eric Yang, 5 points, 7th place; Nicole Fessler, 4.5 points, 11th place; Keith Baka, 4 points, 19th place; and Cander Rosenthal 3.5 points, 26th place. The Mosaic team had a total of 17 points out of a possible 24.
Other sixth-grade participants included Donald "Nicholas" Carroll, Drew Engberg, Aeris Severson, Clayton Nichols and Marcus Ellair. Seventh-grade participants included Kassie Brown, Jasmine Brown, John Rango, Alex Dean, Kevin Krentz and Jerome "J.J." Wood, Jr.
The ACUITY Tournament was the first where the Mosaic Chess Club members wore T-shirts designed by Troy Tousey. The T-shirts were the suggestion of parent Nancy Engberg, who organized the project. “Our club is very grateful to the Acuity Charitable Foundation for a wonderful day at the fine facilities at Acuity,” said Mosaic visual arts teacher Stuart Howland, who directs the club.
