Mosaic School Chess Team Doing Well in Area Tournaments
For the second week in a row, the Mosaic Chess Team placed second in an area tournament.
The Mosaic team won second place in the Grant/ESAA Chess Tournament at North on March 3 and second place in the Holy Family Chess Tournament on March 10.
“Since first donning our Troy Tousey-designed shirts, the Mosaic Chess Team has brought home trophies at every event,” said team coordinator Stuart Howland. “The shirts are definitely working!”
The Mosaic team had only four participants at the Grant/ESAA event at North, but they proved to be a powerful force. Sixth-grade participants and their points were as follows: Cander Rosenthal, 4 points; Drew Engberg, 3 points; and John Rango, 3 points. Seventh-grader Alex Dean also scored 3 points, bringing the team’s total to 13 and giving them a second-place finish.
At the Holy Family tournament, the Mosaic team was a mere half-point behind the first-place finisher, Holy Family. Seventh-grader Jerome "J.J." Wood Jr. scored 4.5 points and fellow seventh-grader Arden Howland scored 4 points. Sixth-graders Eric Yang and Keith Baka also scored 4 points each, bringing the team total to 16.5 and a second-place team trophy.
Seventh-grader J.J. Wood Jr. also received a fifth-place individual trophy at the six-round tournament.
Other Mosaic Chess Team participants at the Holy Family tournament were sixth-graders Aeris Severson and Clayton Nichols and seventh-graders John Rango and Alex Dean.
