photoJackson Elementary and A2 Charter Schools’ Student Council recently challenged their classmates to raise money for animal care at the Sheboygan County Humane Society. Students in each classroom were encouraged to bring in their pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, and dollars. Some went the extra mile and brought in five dollar bills, ten dollar bills and wow, even twenty dollar bills. The students’ generous donations filled sixteen milk jugs and totaled over $780.

photoStudents in Lisa Pipers' class at Wilson Elementary School recently held their annual science fair. Students started their project by determining a problem they wanted to solve. Using the scientific method, students developed a hypothesis and wrote their procedures at school.  Students then conducted research and experiments at home and compiled the data to show their results. Students drew conclusions based on the results of their experiments and compiled them for review. Students then displayed and demonstrated their projects to their visitors.

The first Mosaic School Chess Tournament was held on St. Patrick’s Day and drew 85 participants from 15 schools. First place in the K3 division went to Kohler Elementary School with 19.5 points. In second place was Sheboygan Christian School with 14.5 points. The third-place finisher was Jackson Elementary School with 13.5 points. In the K7 division, first place went to Sheboygan Christian School with 18 points. In second place was host Mosaic with 16 points. The third-place finisher was Kohler Elementary School with 14 points.

photoOn Tuesday, March 13, Sheboygan North’s Culinary Team competed against 21 other schools at the 2012 Wisconsin ProStart® Student Invitational, during the Wisconsin Restaurant Expo held at the Frontier Airlines Center in Milwaukee. Teams participating in the culinary competition must demonstrate their creative abilities through the preparation of a three-course meal in only 60 minutes. Their performance during the practical session is observed and rated by judges from leading colleges and universities.

photoMrs. Lynn Pekulik’s class at Jefferson Elementary School recently took a field trip to the Heritage School. Built in 1876, Heritage School is very different from the modern conveniences of Jefferson Elementary School.  The students used old-fashioned pen and ink to practice penmanship and participated in a spelling bee.  The Heritage School teachers explained classroom rules and punishments from that era.  Reading, arithmetic on the slate board, and Wisconsin geography topped off the learning experience.

photoWilson School students spent the week of February 27 through March 2 celebrating Read Across America Week.  Starting the week off with special guest, Admiral Reader, the Admiral told students how important reading is for their future and singing his one of a kind LUF Song.  Read to (L)earn, read to (U)understand, read to have (F)un.

To prepare for the event, staff members decorated their doors in themes taken from Dr. Seuss books and other favorites.  Throughout the week students celebrated pajama reading day, flashlight reading day, and retired teacher reading day.  In addition, staff and students dressed as book characters and enjoyed Green Eggs and Ham prepared and served for the entire school by members of the planning committee.

Jackson and A2 held their annual Jump Rope for Heart event during their Physical Education classes in February. Students topped previous donations by raising over $3,000 for the American Heart Association to help people struggling with heart disease and stroke.  The two students who brought in the highest total donations were Alex Foreman and Kelly Whipple.  They each raised over $250.  All students actively participate to keep their hearts healthy with lots of rope jumping, contests, and other heart healthy activities.  These activities were directed and overseen by Phy Ed teachers, David Rautmann and Mike Martin.

photoThe thirteenth annual Battle of the Books competition took place on Thursday, March 15, 2012 at Longfellow Elementary School.  This literacy competition is designed to motivate fifth grade students to read and have fun doing so!  The Battle of the Books also encourages book discussions while promoting responsibility and cooperative behavior.

photoMembers of the Lincoln-Erdman Elementary School Student Council recently organized a fundraiser that was not only fun, but also raised money to sponsor an animal at the Milwaukee County Zoo. Students planned a dance, called the ‘Jungle Jam,’ and invited fellow students and their families. One dollar from each $2 admission fee was a donation to the Zoo. The remaining fees collected went to provide refreshments to the attendees.

photoMusic was pumping through the speakers in Farnsworth Middle School’s cafeteria as sixth graders enjoyed a ten-minute extension to their lunch period as a reward for positive behavior. The reward is part of Farnsworth’s implementation of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program.

photoStudent Council members of Jackson and A2 enjoyed reading books to Meadow View Manor nursing home residents during a recent service project. Jackson and A2 students made Valentine's and Student Council members made chocolate party favors for the residents.  The hour visit was filled with many smiles, and a comment from one of the employees of the nursing home was that the residents would remember this day for a long time.

photoWilson Elementary School crowned Alyssa King as Geography Bee Champion. Fourth and fifth grade students participated in preliminary Geography competitions in their classrooms. Two finalists from each classroom advanced to the finals. Cassie Haen, Hunter Kuester, Alyssa King, Devon Lallensack, Violet Rettler, Vanessa Ziegler, Chloe Renzelmann, Lindsey Thompson, Austin Drews, Doriana Avdolli, Olivia Mickelson, Joshua Vang, Lucy Mattern competed in the final competition. All finalists received medals. Devon Lallensack received a silver medal. Violet Rettler earned a bronze medal.

The fifth grade students at Lincoln-Erdman Elementary School have been working hard on completing a research project.  Each 5th grader chose an animal of interest to research.  After researching online at Lincoln-Erdman the students took a trip to the Mead Public Library where the students began note taking. The notes were then used to write an informative paper on their animal.  The final piece of the project is a student designed Powerpoint slideshow that they presented to classmates.

For the second week in a row, the Mosaic Chess Team placed second in an area tournament. The Mosaic team won second place in the Grant/ESAA Chess Tournament at North High School on March 3 and second place in the Holy Family Chess Tournament on March 10.

The Mosaic team had only four participants at the Grant/ESAA event at North, but they proved to be a powerful force. Sixth-grade participants and their points were as follows: Cander Rosenthal, 4 points; Drew Engberg, 3 points; and John Rango, 3 points. Seventh-grader Alex Dean also scored 3 points, bringing the team’s total to 13 and giving them a second-place finish.

Mosaic student Eric Yang placed 30th out of 142 competitors at the state MATHCOUNTS competition on March 3 at the Lowell Center in Madison. “It was exciting to compete with many other students, but the problems were much harder at the state competition,” Eric said. “I think I did really well ... and hope to compete at state again next year and do even better!”

MATHCOUNTS is a national enrichment club and competition program with the goal to inspire math excellence, confidence, and curiosity in U.S. middle school students. The 2012 Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Competition will be May 11 in Orlando, Fla.

photoHorace Mann Middle School chess team members have already won several Single as well as Team trophies in recent tournaments, since the school started a chess club in January 2012. About 20 students are attending the instructional meetings each week, with experienced coaches helping beginning as well as advanced players to improve their chess skills. Students can learn to play chess on a competitive level or just for fun. Since chess helps students to focus, think ahead, weigh all options, visualize and analyze, participating students not only have fun playing the game, but also improve their academic skill sets and learn for life.

photoKim Selby, gym teacher at Wilson Elementary School organized a Jump Rope for Heart event to coincide with her curriculum unit on jump rope skills. Leading up to the event, students learned and practiced skills as basic as just jumping over a swinging rope to jumping with partners. Students raised over $3,000 to fund lifesaving research and educational programs through the Jump Rope for Heart program.

For the past several years under the leadership of the Student Council, James Madison Elementary School students have participated in the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Pennies for Patients program. Pennies for Patients gives Madison School students the opportunity to experience the powerful feeling that comes from working together to help others. It raises awareness and funds in honor of local children battling blood cancers like leukemia.

photoThe Early Learning Center (ELC) has launched a ‘Pennies for Books’ campaign to raise money to purchase quality reading books for the students at the school. Students were asked to look for pennies in their home and donate the pennies to help purchase books for each of the 650 students enrolled at ELC.  The campaign began on February 20 and will conclude on April 5.  Through the generosity of students and families, the ELC has already raised $700.

photoThanks to the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, the Readers Theatre for Children came to Jefferson Elementary on February 21, 2012 to read a variety of classic and contemporary children’s poems and stories to the students.  Students in kindergarten through third grade each enjoyed a 30 minute presentation by the volunteer readers. The children thoroughly enjoyed listening to the scripts.

On Friday, March 2nd, students at Lincoln-Erdman Elementary School joined millions of other school-aged children in celebrating Read Across America Day in honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday.  The event was planned by teachers Cheryl Meyer, Sue Mrdjenovich and Erin Lamb. The day began with the singing of a silly Green Eggs and Ham song and the choral reading of the Dr. Seuss book, Green Eggs and Ham.  After the story, the students had the opportunity to eat green eggs and ham prepared by the parents and teachers.

photoColleen Sherry, art specialist at Wilson Elementary School arranged for students to visit the John Michael Kohler Arts Center recently.  Students toured the exhibit "Kids Are All Right" focusing on homes, houses and family situations.  

Following their tour, students participated in a project to create their own house. Using their imagination and various materials, students designed windows, roofs, chimneys, doors, siding, curtains, and even landscaping to create their own dream house.

photoGrandma Renda, a Foster Grandparent volunteer, reads to students at Wilson School during her weekly visits. Students share the experience with their stuffed animal "reading buddy."  The Reading Buddy Program is meant to encourage and support the enjoyment of reading at home and it centers around reading to a stuffed animal or "Buddy." Each student received a stuffed animal along with a certificate to "name his or her buddy."

photoJefferson Elementary School students went on a field trip to the Sheboygan County Museum where they learned about Native American culture. There were numerous hands-on history activities in which the students participated. They were given the opportunity to explore how to grind corn by using rocks, how to make a “corn husk” doll, how to lash sticks together to build ladder-like construction, how to bind a projectile point to a shaft using sinew, and how to weave a basket from natural materials. The students also participated in craft-making activities, such as making a beaded bracelet and making an ankle “jingle” belt.  In addition, they learned how to decode messages written with Native American symbol language, how cradleboards were used for young children, and how fire was made with a “fire drill”.

photoThe Sheboygan North High School Art Department is happy to announce that three paintings:  have been selected to be on display at Johnston Bakery, 1227 Superior Avenue in Sheboygan. The Drawing/Painting II students have been using the bakery from Johnston Bakery as their source of inspiration. All paintings are done in a realistic manner with a bit of the students’ own personality added to the composition.

photoMush!  Hike!  The third graders at Wilson Elementary School are studying the Iditarod, a dogsled race held in Alaska every March.  Some special guests came to Wilson to teach students about the dogs that pull sleds and about the Iditarod.  Cliff Henning, Jessica Vogel and her son AJ along with three dogs Razzle, Luther, and Vinny explained how to harness a sled dog, hook a team of sixteen dogs up to the sled and what supplies are needed for the Iditarod Race.

photoA group of Sheridan elementary school students took part in the 4-H Music and Drama Festival on Saturday, February 18th at the UW-Sheboygan Theater. The children performed a medley of lullabies and good night stories titled ‘Good Night Sweetheart’. The children received a special participation award and ribbons.
