The Mosaic Middle School Chess Club placed second out of 15 teams in the sixth- through eighth-grade division of the Sheboygan County Chess Championship on Saturday, Feb. 18. The five-level, six-round, Swiss-style tournament was sponsored by Acuity Charitable Foundation. The four top scores and rankings (out of 74 participants) for the Mosaic team were from sixth-graders: Eric Yang, 5 points, 7th place; Nicole Fessler, 4.5 points, 11th place; Keith Baka, 4 points, 19th place; and Cander Rosenthal 3.5 points, 26th place. The Mosaic team had a total of 17 points out of a possible 24.

Six South High School culinary arts students have earned the national ServSafe certification. This safety and sanitation based certification is a difficult accomplishment, which few students achieve. Training for this certification takes place in the National Restaurant Association's ProStart Culinary Arts Program at South taught by Betty Price. One person in every Wisconsin restaurant must be ServSafe certified by law.

Seth Harvatine, Director of Instructional Services for the Sheboygan Area School District, recently received the Outstanding Administrator Award from the Wisconsin State Reading Association. This award honors Wisconsin school administrators who demonstrate leadership in the field of reading. He was among five administrators recognized state-wide.

As part of their positive behavior program at Cleveland Elementary School a group of 3rd grade students read a fun poem written by Gelett Burgessas, as a reminder to the other students to use their manners in the cafeteria. Everyone got a laugh and learned in a fun way! "Goops" are a series of books written about manners and etiquette more than 100 years ago by Gelett Burgess. The cheerful illustrations and happy rhymes which conveyed good manners in years past, still apply today, and are timeless in the lessons that they teach.

The 1st annual Hyper Tails Agility Club's Soup War was held on Saturday, January 21st, 2012. A field of 8 students from 2 area high schools brought their best soups from which South High School students earned 2nd Place and People's Choice. 2nd Place went to Dalton Burke for his zesty chicken tortellini soup. The public voted Paige Soeren's potato cheese soup as winner of the People’s Choice award.

The Mosaic Chess Club team of Alex Dean and Arden Howland placed third in the K8 category at the 5th Annual Kohler Schools Chess Tournament on Feb. 11. Arden, a seventh-grader at the charter school, also placed second as an individual in the K8 division. Arden’s teammate, Alex, is a seventh-grader as well.

Recently, Cleveland Elementary School held an evening of games and fun with a Western theme. There was a DJ providing music for the families along with a bounce house for everyone to enjoy. Some of the games were digging for gold nuggets, lasso the horse, snake in the boot and decorate a bandana. Wanted posters of the staff members decorated the walls to add to the Western theme and fun. There were also tons of raffles and prizes that were donated by many businesses. Many families thought it was a wonderful way to break up the winter!

Three South High School culinary arts students earned all 3 prizes at the 1st annual Hyper Tails Agility Club's Food Fight Bake Off held on Saturday, February 11th, 2012. Earning first place in the Cake category was Allison Edwards with her carrot cake. First place in the Cookie/Bar category was won by Dalton Burke with his root beer float cookies. The People’s Choice award for most popular vote went to Samantha Doxtator for her almond brownies.

On Friday, February 3, 2012, Jefferson Elementary School students and The Gameboard joined together to celebrate positive behavior. Students collectively reached their goal of earning 15,000 slips recognizing positive behavior, or PAWs as Jefferson calls them. As their reward, students participated in 45-minute sessions of playing educational games provided by THE GAMEBOARD. School superintendent Joe Sheehan made a visit during the celebration to show his support.

On Thursday, February 6th, the members of the Zoological Society of Milwaukee visited Cleveland Elementary and NEW Montessori School. They spent the morning educating students about distinguishing mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish. Students learned about how these animals’ body coverings are unique to each animal and how those coverings protect them in their habitats. They learned how animal senses effect animals with everything from finding their homes to finding food. In addition, students learned that animal parasites can be both harmful and beneficial. Students gained an overall understanding of how all these things combined contribute to animal survival.

Horace Mann students held a supply drive they called "Small Things Make a BIG Difference" in January. After hearing that their school's Charger Pantry was in need of non-food items, the students brought in donations of items including shampoo, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, diapers, baby wipes, laundry detergent, toilet paper, and much more. A grand total of 891 items were brought in to stock the school's pantry, which benefits Horace Mann students and their families in need of these everyday household supplies.

Dance students from the Mosaic School will watch a performance by the Chicago River North Dance Company on March 2. The dance company will be at Kohler Memorial Theatre as part of the Kohler Foundation’s Distinguished Guest Series. "The opportunity to view dance performed live, especially by such a well-known company, is indeed a memorable experience that I am thrilled to have my students partake in,” said Mosaic dance teacher Rayna Rokicki. “Dance doesn't translate well to video. In order to really feel the piece and connect with the performers, one must experience a dance performance in person. I am grateful to the Kohler Foundation for bringing this company to town and allowing my students this opportunity."

Students in Sue Heniadis' class at Wilson Elementary School presented the play "Johnny Appleseed" to their families and fellow students in late January..The play was the kickoff event to their study of pioneers and immigrants in the second grade social studies curriculum. In April, second graders will visit the Sheboygan County Historical Museum where volunteers will help them experience what it was like to be a pioneer in Sheboygan County more than 150 years ago.

A Mosaic Middle School student has qualified to participate in the state MATHCOUNTS competition on March 3 at the Lowell Center in Madison. Eric placed 11th out of more than 150 middle-school students at the MATHCOUNTS competition Feb. 4 at Acuity in Sheboygan. "I was excited to qualify for the state meet as only a sixth grader!” Eric exclaimed. “I am looking forward to going to the state meet and will be practicing hard until then."

Students from low-income families, minority students and those who are the first in their families to go to college have eight times more difficulty getting into college than other students, according to research conducted by Diversity Scholars. That’s why Diversity Scholars is teaming with school districts like Sheboygan to help students gain access to new opportunities to pursue post-secondary academic goals. Chris Clarke, national organizer and co-founder of Diversity Scholars, recently led a “Get Motivated/Get Ready” college readiness rally for about 70 high school students at IDEAS Academy.

Sheboygan South High School has selected Julia Vorpahl and Malia Xiong to represent the school at the annual Badger Girls State Program this June at U.W. Oshkosh. Bradley Pfeifer and Aaron Stenz were selected to represent the school at the annual Badger Boys State Program this June at Ripon College. Badger Girls and Badger Boys provides a working knowledge of local and state government and an opportunity for an experience as self-governing citizens sharing experiences that demonstrate the duties, privileges, and responsibilities of a good citizen.

Sheboygan North High Culinary Club had a very active, successful first semester. In October, members Hunter Lewis and Kyle Mares were selected for the opportunity to cook along side Destination Kohler chefs at the Annual Food and Wine Event in Kohler. In November, the Culinary Club created an award-winning gingerbread house for the Kohler Foundation’s Annual Gingerbread Festival at the Waelderhaus. In January, Kyle Mares captured the 1st Place “People’s Choice” Award for his Apple Chirizo soup in Soup Wars, sponsored by Hyper Trails Agility Club, Sheboygan Falls.

'Movie Night' was the theme for Jefferson Elementary School’s Family Fun Night on February 6. Students and their families were able to choose from five movies showing on SmartBoards in different classrooms. Each attendee received popcorn and a juicebox. Raffles were drawn for prizes donated by posters and gift cards donated by Family Video and movie passes donated by Marc Cinemas.

James Madison fourth graders toured the Sheboygan County Museum as part of their social studies curriculum, which encompasses the study of Native Americans of Sheboygan County. Students explored Native American artifacts and engaged in several hands-on activities including basket weaving, the creation of regalia, symbol writing, and lashing tree limbs with sinew. Students also learned how to properly carry a cradleboard as well as how to create a fire using various primitive tools.

Horace Mann Middle School students were awarded the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) traveling trophy for their participation in the annual Kids Walk to Cure Diabetes educational school fundraising program. Erin Hennessy and Sandy Lange from JDRF thanked Horace Mann students for their fundraising efforts this fall and presented them with the JDRF’s Silver Star banner. Horace Mann students raised almost $1900 to help find a cure for Type I diabetes after learning about the disease in their physical education classes. Local JDRF representatives visited the physical education classes to discuss issues and obstacles that children experience when diagnosed with Type I diabetes and the importance of making healthy choices.

Fifth grade band students of Mrs. Patricia Milsted from Jackson Elementary, Wilson Elementary, and A2 Charter Schools participated in a recording session on January 10, 2012 with South High Symphonic Band students. There were 110 students who joined forces to record music that the fifth graders recently performed at their holiday concerts. The high school students also played some of their favorite pep band tunes for the fifth graders and those songs were recorded as well. Each fifth grader will receive a souvenir CD. Each elementary school band member sat next to their high school "band buddy" who made them feel welcome and helped them along when necessary.

It’s not every day that students get to channel a red blood cell. And that’s a good thing, because they’ve found it’s a pretty tricky job. Science teacher Vicky Rhodes asked Mosaic middle school students to describe a trip throughout the circulatory system from the point of view of a red blood cell. The trip had to start and end at the vena cava. The journey could be described as a written story, a comic strip or a picture book. “Most of the students wrote stories, about 10 percent did comic strips and a few did dramatic presentations,” Mrs. Rhodes said. “The stories were written in a variety of styles – some giving a tour or using the trip through the heart as sort of a life’s journey for the blood cell.”

A handful of SASD students are the stars of an online advertisement for MOVband, a wristwatch-style pedometer designed to get kids moving. The video was filmed right here in Sheboygan including shots at Farnsworth Middle School. Josh Roenitz, producer of the video and one of the founders of MOVband, worked with a former North High classmate, Charles Renzelmann, who was the Assistant Principal at Farnsworth Middle School to coordinate production of the film. The film crew transformed parts of the city and Farnsworth Middle School into a production studio. All of the children in the film are current SASD students.

Parents and select community members will have a very special dining opportunity next month. Elementary School for the Arts and Academics (ESAA) first and second grade students are designing a restaurant for their current health unit. “So far the children have chosen a menu, had a professional photographer photograph the food for advertising, and have learned about kitchen hygiene,” second-grade teacher Elizabeth Marzouki said. “They will price the food, learn about advertising, purchase the food, make invitations, practice roles needed for the restaurant, and practice public speaking before inviting the community.”

A school field trip really paid off for IDEAS Academy junior Jacob Olmedo. Thanks to connections he made that day, he has an opportunity to get invaluable work experience and pre-college credits this summer. Jacob was one of ten IDEAS students who took part in last fall’s National Portfolio Day at the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design.
Interested in fashion design, Jacob shared his portfolio and met with representatives from several prestigious art schools. He was particularly interested in the Art Institute of Chicago and the California College for the Arts. The latter offered him a scholarship for its pre-college summer program.

Again this year, students at Wilson Elementary School have been collecting pop tops for their annual donation to charity. Mrs. Deb Tryba, parent volunteer, established a Pop Tops Committee this year. Besides helping with the collection, the committee members totally redecorated the collection barrel. The barrel shows a picture of the school mascot, Wolfie, and was painted with chalkboard paint so collection dates could be displayed.

In its continuing quest for technological advancement, Jefferson Elementary School recently received 60 iPads through a Title grant. Included with the iPads are covers and carts for storage/charging. Applications, or apps, have been added to the iPads at primary and intermediate levels. Teachers are able to check out the iPads for classroom use.
Each of the classrooms at Jefferson has a SmartBoard, an ELMO computerized projector, and an LCD projector. This technology enables the teachers to utilize current trends in learning.
