photoMike McDonnough meets with his after school Chess Club run by the Community Recreation Department in the Wilson Elementary School IMC every Monday.  Chess Club members range in age from first through fifth grade.   Mr. McDonnough is assisted by his older son, now an 11th grade student at South High, who was once a member of the group.  Parents are welcome and sometimes begin playing along with the students after learning how to play.  Mr. McDonnough supplies all the equipment including a giant floor model chess board which he made himself.

photoThe South High Varsity and JV Dance Teams traveled to Freedom on Saturday, January 7th to compete in the Freedom Invitational. The Varsity continued its Hip Hop tradition of first place finishes by placing 1st in the D1 Hip Hop Division. They also placed 4th in the Pom division. The JV Dance Team brought home first place trophies in both Hip Hop and Pom. Carlee Reinemann coaches the Varsity team; Paige Riste and Megan Timm coach the JV team.

photoOn Saturday, January 21st, 2012 the South High School JV Dance Team competed at the WACPC State JAM Championships held at Sheboygan South High School. The JV Team was crowned State Champions in both the Pom and Hip Hop division. The team placed first out of 10 teams in the D1 Pom Division finishing 17 points ahead of the second place team. They also placed first in the D1 Hip Hop Division finishing 28 points ahead of their competition. Paige Riste and Megan Timm coach the team.

The Lakeland College women’s basketball team held a Jr. Muskies Clinic at Sheridan Elementary School on January 26th.  The staff worked with the young athletes on basic fundamentals that are important for all basketball players: shooting form, rebounding technique, passing, dribbling and ball handling, and defensive position.

All the participants received a Lakeland Schedule Poster with the signature of the team members. It was great fun for all the students that took part in this event.

photoConnie Berken feels very fortunate to be the Art teacher at Jefferson Elementary School and has been at Jefferson for the past 14 years.  She loves sharing her passion for art with her students, but mostly loves seeing the creative ideas the children put into their work. On Thursday January 19th, students and staff from Grant Elementary School celebrated positive second-quarter behavior with a school trip to Blue Line Ice Center.  Many parents were also able to join in the fun.  The trip was sponsored by the Grant/ESAA PTO.  
 
This activity is part of the Positive Behavior Intervention System (PBIS) utilized by Grant and many schools throughout the district.  PBIS focuses on recognizing and rewarding students for making good behavior choices, as well as teaching expected behaviors as needed.

On Friday, January 27, 2012, James Madison fourth graders in Mrs. Tammy Babler’s class operated a business - Nachos R Us - selling nachos as part of their economics unit. In preparation for the sale, students posted signs and made daily announcements to the entire school to advertise the upcoming sale. In addition, they sold tickets and were in charge of preparing and distributing the final product to their customers. During the sale, students provided excellent customer service as they led peers in the selection and transport of trays as needed.

photoPeg Jaeger, a teacher in the Sheboygan Area School District (SASD), was the 2011 recipient of the Gina K. Flease Memorial Educator of the Year Award from the Wisconsin Juvenile Detention Educators Association. Ms. Jaeger works with SASD students at the Sheboygan County Juvenile Detention Program. Her role is extremely important to keep this unique segment of students on track with their education.

Sheboygan Countywide Crime Stoppers now offers students, parents, and school staff the opportunity to securely and anonymously report “school-specific” crimes or safety concerns (including bullying) to the police and their School Resource Officer (SRO). Offered community wide, this program also allows for specific tips to be directed to the SRO’s at Farnsworth, Horace Mann, and Urban Middle Schools, as well as North and South High Schools.

On January 8th and 9th, students at Longfellow Elementary School were in full learning mode.  As part of the school’s Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program, students were re-taught expected school-wide behaviors in various locations within the building. Referred to as the “Booster,” students went from station to station participating in games, activities, on-line quizzes, and video clips that provided students with examples of expected positive behavior. At each of the stations, lessons started out by reminding students of the 3 R’s – respect self, respect others, and respect the environment - the three expectations by which Longfellow students live and learn.

photoHeather Hanson, SASD Instructional Technology Resource Teacher, recently visited Dee Dee Wolowicz' class at Wilson Elementary School.  She demonstrated how to use iPods for the third, fourth, and fifth graders. Students learned a variety of things about programming, making and printing postcards, how to go on a website to search for photos, how to dialogue, and even how to make their own puppet show. Students then displayed their projects on the SMARTboard.  

Mrs. Wolowicz arranged the session with Heather Hanson who works with teachers throughout the district to assist them in using technology to further student learning.

Cleveland Elementary School has implemented the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program starting this school year.  PBIS is a system that teaches the students the expectations at school and reinforces the behavior with positive encouragement when it is done correctly. When a student is “caught doing what is expected” they may receive a Positive Attitudes Will Succeed (PAWS) slip. They put their name on the PAWS slip and they put it into the classroom bucket. Each week, the PAWS are counted and collected. At weekly assemblies, the total for the school is announced and two students from each class are selected to choose from the prize cart.

photoJefferson Elementary School’s after school program held “Salsa Night” for its students and their parents on January 11, 2012.  A taco dinner was served prior to the evening’s main attraction, salsa dancing.  Four local dance instructors volunteered their time and experience to teach the families the basics of salsa dancing. The instructors had previously taught the students during the After School Program (ASP) in Creative Arts class.  The ASP students also made invites for the event during their Computer Lab classes.  43 students and their parents/guardians attended the event, which was a fun time for all.

Wilson Elementary School students participated in an after-school group to learn sign language to perform at an all-school sign along. The after-school group is modeled after a silent choice called "Silent Voices, Singing Hands." Members of the group, directed by Mrs. Lisa Piper, range in age from kindergarten through college age and are drawn from public, parochial, and home school settings. Piper founded the group in 1992 and has directed the group since the beginning.

photoKerri Olsen, kindergarten English language learner (ELL) teacher at Wilson Elementary School not only has a warm spot in her heart for her students but also helps keep them warm during winter weather by hand crafting hats for each one.  Ms. Olsen measures, cuts, sews, and hand ties the tassels on each hat, making what she calls boy hats and girl hats.

photoOn Saturday January 14, 2012, ten area art teachers participated in the first annual Art Teacher Idea Exchange at Sheboygan North High School hosted by the Wisconsin Art Education Association (WAEA) and local WAEA members. The Idea Exchange provided a wonderful opportunity for art teachers to get together and exchange ideas, lesson plans and instructional thoughts. Participants were asked to bring one lesson plan plus visual samples. Teachers were also asked to bring one “teacher tip” to share. The event provided a forum for collaboration with teachers from different grade levels and district to share ideas and different approaches to art instruction.

A $3,000 donation from the Liars Club of Sheboygan was used, in part, to purchase a new range and microwave for the special education department.

Warriner High School for Personalized Learning – waged a friendly penny war to raise money for a worthy cause. photoIf you walk through the halls of Lake Country Academy (LCA) this month, you may think you are in “Wonderland.” Actually, you will be in the middle of an annual LCA tradition where the 8th grade Art class displays artwork created while studying Pop Art. Pop Art is an art movement that emerged in the late 1950s in the United States that includes imagery and objects from popular culture. As a part of the Core Knowledge Curriculum, students learn about the art movement and artists Warhol, Lichtenstein, and Oldenburg. The eighth grade also learns about scale and dimension, as well as the obvious difficulty in creating an object “larger than life.”

photoTwice a month students at Washington School for Comprehensive Literacy can add to their personal libraries by purchasing books from the school bookstore. Every other Wednesday, students are invited browse the shop’s three display shelves: fiction, nonfiction, and picture books.  With every book priced at just $1.00, the bookstore provides an opportunity for students to own books at a very reasonable price. A frequent shopper card also gives a free book for every five purchased.

photoSheboygan North High School Drawing Intensive art students have produced a series of large format drawings for the Sheboygan Post Office located at 522 N. 9th Street. This exhibition features drawings by William Haas, Jeremy Maslanka, Megan Mata, Elizabeth Menzer, Naomi Schleider, Kelsey Taubenheim, Heather Weber and Tou Lee Xiong. This exhibition will run until February 29, 2012.

photoLisa Flooks' first grade students at Wilson Elementary School started out by making a simple wish list and learned a whole lot along the way. Beginning with a discussion of what exactly a list is, students then wrote out a "sloppy copy" of their Wish List.  This, of course, led to a discussion of spelling, capitalization, the introduction of the use of the apostrophe (i.e. Linda's Wish List) and the inevitable corrections. Students also learned computer skills as part of this project, as they typed their lists on the computer.

The South High Culinary Arts Team was awarded all 3 prizes at the 1st Annual Chili Cook-Off sponsored by the Hyper Tails Agility Club.The South High School Culinary Arts Department utilizes the ProStart curriculum created by the National Restaurant Association.
