Longfellow Welcomes New Principal, Kicks Off Positive Behavior Expectations
The first day of school at Longfellow Elementary school opened with welcoming new Principal, Mr. Karl Bekkum. Mr. Bekkum has been an administrator in the Sheboygan Area School District for 8 years, and for the last 6 years was the Principal at Washington Elementary School. Mr. Bekkum shared his enthusiasm for the new school year by explaining to the students that his favorite day of the year is not Christmas, nor his birthday but it is the first day of school. All the students welcomed him with a vigorous round of applause.
Mr. Bekkum invited students to learn about the school’s Positive Behavior Intervention and Support system, commonly referred to as PBIS. Students and teachers took part in group learning activities around the school and each station introduced the behavior expectations for that specific location. The locations included hallways, stairwells, lunchroom, bathrooms and playground. Students were taught the appropriate volume, walking, waiting in lines, taking turns and stopping when recess is over to line up quickly. With this practice and understanding, the students will be rewarded for their positive behavior with Longfellow ‘PAWS’ slips and reward times. Above all, PBIS will provide the understanding for a safe environment at Longfellow School.
Mrs. Tammy Olig, Guidance Counselor, teaches Kindergarten classes outdoor positive behavior expectations.
