Pigeon River Fifth Grader Wins Supreme Court Essay Contest
Elliot Opel, a Pigeon River 5th grader, recently won an essay contest sponsored by the Wisconsin Supreme Court. His essay was on the first amendment of the U.S. Constitution. He discussed how this amendment allowed him to have freedom of speech and religion and also allowed him to read whatever books he wanted. He was invited to share his essay at the opening of the Wisconsin Supreme Court's session, held in Sheboygan, as part of the Court's "Justice on Wheels" program. The "Justice on Wheels" program was launched 20 years ago as a public outreach initiative with the chief justice selecting one or two locations to visit each term. Elliot received a plaque signed by the Supreme Court, and was given the opportunity to stay and listen to some of the court proceeding.
