The eighteenth annual Battle of the Books competition took place on Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at Longfellow School. This literacy competition is designed to motivate students to read and have fun doing so! In addition, the Battle of the Books encourages book discussions, while promoting responsibility and cooperative behavior.
Teams of students were formed with children representing ten different elementary schools. Each team member was responsible for reading nine books from a list of twenty-seven assigned books. The books covered a variety of levels, genres and interests. The Battle of the Books is organized by Holly Hansen-Grotbeck from Longfellow School and Lori Roelse from Jefferson/Pigeon River Schools.
There were nearly 400 fifth grade students on sixty-five teams competing. Participating schools included Cleveland, Cooper, Grant, Jackson, James Madison, Jefferson, Lincoln-Erdman, Longfellow, Pigeon River and Sheridan. The top twenty teams were recognized with individual ribbons, medals or trophies. All participants received a certificate of participation, and some lucky students were chosen to win a new book to take home and enjoy. All of the students are to be commended for their effort and participation. The top five teams and their members include:
