North State FBLA Champions Break Barriers at 2011 FBLA National Leadership Conference

Sheboygan North High School's Tyler Stank, Kaley Meicher, and Samuel Wang attended the 2011 Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) National Leadership Conference in Orlando, Florida, from June 28-July 2, 2011.  All three were state champions at the FBLA State Leadership Conference in April. The theme for 2010-2011 conference was Breaking Barriers.

Tyler Stank, who will be a senior this fall, competed in the Desktop Programming Application event. Stank advanced to the finals and placed seventh in the nation. This is Stank’s second time competing at the National Leadership Conference.

Prior to the conference, Stank's event required him to write a computer program for a grade book and accompanying calculations. He spent over 50 hours on the coding and making the fine tuning adjustments. While in Orlando, Stank successfully advanced from the preliminary round by presenting his work to a panel of three judges.  Only the top ten advanced to final round.  On the next day, he presented his program to a panel of two judges in a seven-minute time frame with an additional three minutes for questions.

Kaley Meicher had both a production test and objective test for her Word Processing I event.  She completed her product part at Lakeshore Technical College in April and the production part in Orlando.  She did not advance to the final round. Meicher will be a junior this fall.

Competing for the first time, Sam Wang was on the Introduction to Parliamentary Procedure event.  Wang was tested on the rules of running a meeting and the national by-laws of the FBLA national organization.  He competed against over 80 members from across the nation. Wang will be a sophomore this fall.

While competing with the best from over 40 states and Canada, the North FBLA members attended workshops, leadership labs, voted for the 2010-2011 leadership for national officer positions, and networked with other FBLA students from across the country.

FBLA is the largest business student vocational education organization.  There are nearly 250,000 FBLA members across the United States and Canada.  Over 8,000 members attended the conference in Orlando.

North High School FBLA Advisors are Tom Gross and Peggy Pankratz.
