Renee Graef, illustrator of more than 70 children's books including My First Little House books and American Girl-Kirsten books, visited Sheridan Elementary and Pigeon River Elementary schools recently to talk about her craft. Graef worked with kindergarten through fifth graders on the process of drawing the characters and setting for a variety of stories from Paul Bunyan to the Nutcracker to Mount Rushmore.
After Graef's visit, many of students felt the emergence of a new potential for creative success within themselves. One kindergarten student in Sheridan's dual language class announced emphatically to the audience, "I am an artist now, and I plan to be an illustrator when I grow up!"
