The Sheboygan Area School District is proud to be the sponsoring agency of the WI Foster Grandparent Program for the past 40 years.
This state and federally funded program places older adults in the elementary classrooms of the district working with children in small groups or one-on-one, always under the direction of the classroom teacher.
These kind and caring older adults or “grandparents” are an important part of the classroom as they provide individual care and attention to those students who need a little extra help with their studies. As the grandparents serve 15 to 25 hours a week they easily become an important part of the classroom setting.
As one second grade teacher said, “Grandma is more than a teacher’s assistant; she is part of our classroom. She is a giver and receiver of hugs; she is a listening ear to the endless stories that a seven-year old is bursting to share; she is a wealth of knowledge as she shares her own stories and brings history to life; she is a role model to a younger generation; and most importantly, she is an encourager who makes each child feel like a special and invaluable part of our classroom. We couldn’t imagine second grade without her!”
Parent Comment…..“This is the best program and John loves working with his grandparent. Thank you SO much.”
Student Comment…..”Dear Grandma, I miss you. I will take my time when it gets harder. I love you forever.”
Having caring older adults in the classrooms of the Sheboygan Area School District, clearly impacts the learning environment and greatly enhances the overall educational experience.
Presently, there are 33 Foster Grandparents and 8 Seniors in School volunteers working at 11 of the 12 elementary schools in the district.Meet Our Foster Grandparents
