The social workers, school counselors, and secretaries responsible for student registration complete and forward the referral forms to Debbie Lauersdorf, Census Secretary. However, any staff member who suspects or learns of a student residing under any of the mentioned conditions should inform the above mentioned school personnel or contact me. Each case needs to be reviewed individually in order to determine eligibility for the program.
Each year the number of "homeless" students in the SASD has grown. Previous staff communications have cited the current economic environment coupled with the exceptional diligence of all SASD staff in recognizing and supporting the McKinney-Vento Act as being reasons for this increase. Last school year 150 students were identified as "homeless". This school year 93 students have already been identified.
