For the last three years Farsworth students have been participating in the Hour of Code during one of their December library visits. The Hour of Code™ is a nationwide initiative by Computer Science Education Week and Code.org to introduce students to one hour of computer science and computer programming. Tens of millions of students in more than 180 countries have taken part.
This year most students are trying the CodeMonkey: Coding Adventure activity. It uses a simple typed language called CoffeeScript, which is similar to JavaScript but has simpler syntax.
Previous years we have done various activities from Code.org, which introduces the programming concepts of loops, events, and conditionals through an intuitive drag-and-drop interface called Blockly.
Dozens of activities are available at code.org/learn. Students who want to continue learning on their own are encouraged to try whichever they like. Some of the best activities for middle schoolers are listed below.
