Sheridan School Starts Reading Buddy Program

Sheridan Elementary School announced a new Reading Program sponsored by the Foster Grandparent/Seniors in School Program. This program is made possible through the generous donation of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.

This new program - the Reading Buddy Program - encourages and supports the enjoyment of reading at home and centers around reading to a stuffed animal - or Buddy.

At the start of the program each student receives a stuffed animal along with a certificate to ‘name' his or her buddy. A major component of the program is to have a Foster Grandparent read to the students and their Reading Buddy in school either one-on-one or in small groups. During this time, the Reading Buddy (stuffed animal dog) will remain at school.

At the conclusion of the school's reading program the students will take their Reading Buddy home and are encouraged to continue reading. During this time, the students will choose one book a week for four weeks to bring home to read to their Buddy. The Reading Buddy and a selected book are the students to keep.
