The twelfth annual Sheboygan Area School District (SASD) Battle of
the Books competition recently took place at Jefferson School. This
literacy competition is designed to motivate students to read and have
fun doing so. In addition, the Battle of the Books encourages book
discussions, while promoting responsibility and cooperative behavior.
Teams of students were formed with children representing different schools. Each team member was responsible for reading nine books from a list of twenty-seven assigned books. The books covered a variety of levels, genres and interests. Lori Roelse from Longfellow School and Holly Hansen-Grotbeck from Sheridan School organized the Battle of the Books competition.
There were fifty teams of fifth graders competing. Participating schools included Cleveland, Cooper, ESAA, Grant, Jackson, James Madison, Jefferson, Lincoln-Erdman, Longfellow, New Wisconsin Montessori and Sheridan. The top twenty teams were recognized with individual ribbons, medals or trophies.
