Botany Students Sell Plants, Garden Furniture

Story by: Jenna Anderson

Botany students held their annual plant sale on May 11, 2013 in the Botany classroom and the greenhouse, raising close to $3,000, according to adviser Nicki Schumacher.
The sale was held from noon until three. A few staff members helped out with the sale and all botany students were required to attend. The goal of the plant sale was to sell as many plants as possible. The money made go towards the following year’s supplies and materials Schumacher stated.
This year, new varieties of annuals were added, including herbs, vegetables, and garden art. The Garden Art was made by the art students and technology students.
For senior Casey Karshner, this was her first year being a part of the plant sale. Karshner said, “It’s a good class to take your senior year. I learned a lot on how to take care of plants.”
Senior Jordan Fenn helped out with the plant sale by planting peppers. Fenn commented, “When you’re planting, watering, and caring for the plants it’s a lot of responsibility and enjoyment.”
This year was senior Jaymz Stempihar’s second year being part of the Botany plant sale. Stempihar was in charge of preparing all the plants. He planted various plant seeds, watched them grow and transplanted them to be sold.
Stempihar stated, “This was my second year helping out in the Botany plant sale. I have been to the plant sale here all four years of my South High career and hope to continue coming each year, as the prices and selection are great.”
Schumacher
said, “It was a huge endeavor, but completely worth it. It was received very well by the public and is an amazing experience for the Botany students.”
